Integrated Service Digital Network
ISDN is an ITU-T standard public digital telecommunications network implemented in many countries throughout the globe. ISDN provides two 64kbps data channels each of which could be used to terminate an Inmarsat-B HSD call. Since the network is fully digital technology, the overall quality is significantly improved over standard analog telephone networks. ISDN networks support higher data rates and set-up times are significantly improved. The ISDN network requires the use of a terminal adapter (TA) to connect the data terminal to the ISDN network.
Compression
Both commercial and propriety compression programs can be utilized to reduce the overall size of data before transmission. This reduces the overall cost of transferring data. There are a variety of compression algorithms available. They are selected dependent on the type and application of the data files to be transferred.

Equipment Requirements

Equipment requirements are dependent on the application.
Internet - LAN/WAN access:
PC for mobile location with internet access software; synchronous interface card or router to connect the PC to the Inmarsat-B terminal; and terrestrial ISDN or Switched 56 kbps service, terminal adapter and network server.
Internet FTP access through the Stratos server:
PC for mobile location with internet access software; synchronous interface card or router to connect the PC to the Inmarsat-B terminal; and Internet access through an Internet Service Provider.
Video conferencing:
PC for mobile location with G.728 compliant video conferencing hardware and software (synchronous interface support); PC for terrestrial location with G.728 compliant video conferencing hardware and software (ISDN interface support); and terrestrial ISDN or Switched 56 kbps service.
Multiple voice, data and fax circuits:
Multiplexers at each location (multiplexers divide the 64 kbps data stream into several slower speed circuits.
